Let’s look at the options for
diet. Before the invention of the
process of making kibble in 1955,
our dog’s diet consisted primarily
of sharing our food with them.
Our cats were fed the same and
often allowed outside where they
could supplement this with any
fresh sources they could hunt.
That diet was always changing,
bringing
nutritional
diversity
that balanced their needs.
Today, you have thousands of
choices for your pets in different
formats. Ultra-processed kibble
of a wide variety of quality
and
ingredients,
questionable
qualities
of
canned,
wet
mixers or entrees, mislabeled
and
represented
freeze-dried
selections and “fresh” brands
in every retail store. Now the
internet is filled with advertising
for
so-called
homemade
and
fresh foods. Marketing phrases
like “complete and balanced,”
“all life stages,” “natural,” and
“organic” lack established legal
definitions.
With all those options and the fact
that you can create homemade
yourself, it presents a difficult
decision as to what is best. This
is often complicated by health
issues that your pet may already
have.
This
brings
me
to
another
complication in this life plan we
need to have for our pets. What
medical intervention is necessary
to have a healthy pet?
Today, the veterinary industry
offers thousands of products they
claim will help or prevent every
health challenge out there. How
do you, as the responsible pet
parent, make the choices that are
necessary for your pet under your
actual circumstances? It seems
like the medical approach is a
cookbook, the same for everyone.
But ask yourself, does your condo
cutie need the same preventatives
as that always outdoor working
farm pup, or that working military
or protection dog exposed to
extreme working conditions?
You need to research and read the
indications on any preventative
or treatment BEFORE you agree
to its use. Your plan needs to be
planned by you with knowledge,
not
thrown
together
on
a
programmed set of visits. Fifty
years ago, there were no wellness
plans or regular visits. This is a
form of marketing. Every drug,
vaccine, preventive, or procedure
is an unnatural pathway that can
result in profound consequences.
When we repeat with multiple
treatments repeatedly or at the
same time, we leave the pets
body
with
a
very
traumatic
experience and damage that must
be repaired.
With this understanding, I will
address the mistakes we make.
